Back in November we reported on the happenings of the next X-Men feature (following X-Men Origins:Wolverine of course), X-Men:First Class, and today we have word that the film will in fact be a prequel and not a sequel as was previously reported.
Lauren Shuler Donner, producer on all previous X-Men films and the upcoming Wolverine, spoke to Fox Movie Channel’s “Life After Film School” about the prequel and said, “It is the first class of Xavier’s school, way back when, so it’s young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that’ll be really fun,” Donner said. “I think (the plan) is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world.” She added that, “hopefully First Class will become its own franchise and we can follow them as they grow up.”
Remembering back to our post in November, johnny thunders and Ryan both brought up good points that in order for this film to remain true to its comic that it needed to be about our current X-Men as kids….and it looks like it’s shaping up to be that way. It feels like they are re-visiting or even attempting to create another X-Men world on top of the one that’s already established. Depending upon how well Wolverine does, I bet Fox will just try and saturate the market with X-Men after X-Men products.
What do you guys think? Are you more excited about this?
What do you think of these new pics? What other summer movies are you interested in seeing artwork from? What summer movies are you most excited to see?
If you are not excited about the Terminator Salvation trailer, or the first Public Enemies trailer, then I’m not sure what can excite you…but I’m thinking the final trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine will come pretty close. You could pretty much sum up this week as the “Week of Dan’s Most Anticipated Movies of the Summer” with news and posters and trailers from Terminator, Public Enemies, and now Wolverine.
The difference with this trailer and the original one released in December and all of the Fox TV spots that were aired is the focus on the supporting mutants. Gambit gets a good portion of this trailer devoted to his character as does Cyclops. As far as I can tell, this movie is looking and shaping up to be a way better X-Men movie than I had originally anticipated when I first heard of its creation. X-Men 3 was a huge letdown and it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth concerning the future of the X-Men franchise, but my hopes are rising after seeing this trailer.
Well, it looks like I was wrong in the previous post because here is the 2nd TV spot for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I was a little behind with the news and I now know that the 3rd TV spot will air tonight during American Idol.
I have a feeling that Fox may be revealing too much story in these TV spots, but when has Fox ever not gone overboard with one of their tentpole movies?
Fox announced last week that they were going to debut 3 TV spots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine and this is the first. The next two spots will air over the course of this week (#2 will air tonight during House) and they will basically form a short narrative on the origins of Wolverine.
Movie News (5/1/08): As we begin the month of May and kick off the summer movie series, an interview done with Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, reveals some interesting notes about the upcoming X-Men spin-off, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” slated to open on May 9th, 2009…
Here are some excerpts from his interview which can be viewed in full here…
On the tone of the movie: “Tonally, I would put it more in the ‘Batman Begins’ sort of realm. That’s sort of where we’re headed…we are dealing with a character who is probably one of the darker comic book characters ever created. The movie has a lot of fun elements, but there are layers of pain and darkness to this character”
On the possibility of doing sequels: “I really wanted to do this spin-off movie, because I felt we hadn’t truly found who this character was. Right now. I feel like I could do another ten or eleven.”
