Now that the summer has come to an end and school is back in session, it’s time for my Summer in Review. Here I will list all of the summer movies that I have seen and didn’t want to dedicate an entire review on, and some that I did dedicate an entire review on. Some of them will be new releases that debuted this summer in theaters, and others will be movies that I finally got around to seeing.

In Theaters

Star Trek

img_StarTrek_300Star Trek was the first movie of the summer that I was able to see. Ironically enough, it was the last movie I saw before my little boy was born, so it was definitely memorable just in that. I have already reviewed it here so you can check out my full review there, but in short, it was one of the best movies I had ever seen. A brilliant combination of old Star Trek lore and modern-day action and storytelling. Beautiful!

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

transformers2-hiThis movie was memorable for many reasons: 1) it was the first movie my wife and I saw together after having our boy, and 2) it sparked one of the best movie discussions on expectations in Truth On Cinema history. Michael Bay brought us another blow-it-up action movie about robots that we loved as kids, but this time, our imaginations were stifled by slow-mo explosions and the exploitation of Megan Fox If you want to read the entire review in all its glory, you can read it here. In short though, whatever expectations I did have were seriously under-met.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

img_HarryPotter6_1I haven’t yet, but am meaning to, write up my full review on the 6th installment of the glorious Harry Potter franchise, so for now, consider this my mini-review-teaser-for-the-full-review-to-come-later. Like I have exhaustively said, I came to the HP party very late and read all of the books prior to seeing any of the movies, this one being the first in the theaters, so having said that: I generally liked this movie a lot but felt that a lot of was left out. A lot of people complain about there being too much “teeny-bopper-love” stuff and not enough action, and while I agree that the end of the movie was a complete failure in capturing the enormity of the battle, I actually really liked the fact that David Yates focused on the relationships more than the good vs. evil saga that can grow weary. Look for my full review later.

Public Enemies

img_PublicEnemies_300Once again, Public Enemies is a movie that I have not fully written up, so just like Harry Potter, this will be my review quick-hit. I absolutely loved this movie! There, is that enough of a review quick-hit?! I am a Michael Mann fan and a Johnny Depp fan to the end, so for me, this was the perfect storm. It had everything for me: action, a historical base, the mob (which I am a huge fan of), organized crime in the 60′s, and Johnny Depp. The two biggest let-downs for me were: Christian Bale and his accent. I thought his character was too big for him.

District 9

district-9-trailerOk, so it seems that I have a lot of full-length reviews to write because here is another movie that I haven’t published my review of yet. This was the most recent summer movie I was able to see and let me tell you: this movie is one of the Top 10 Best Sci-Fi Films in the last two decades. What a mind blowing movie! I think the factor that takes this film into “unbelievable” territory is the fact that the film only cost $30 million to make. What is that, like a tenth of the horrific failure Transformers 2?! Don’t walk, run to the theaters while it’s still there and discover one of the true gems of the summer.

DVD

Into The Wild

img_IntotheWild_300For my full review, click here. Before watching this movie, I knew only that Sean Penn had directed it and it was about a lone misfit twentysomething that wanted to hitchhike his way to Alaska to “find himself” or some other hippie journey. To be honest, in the beginning, I passed it off as one of those films you aren’t interested in at a glance. Either you “judged a book by its cover” or you “put all of your eggs in one basket” or some other phrase that essentially means you prejudged something before actually experiencing it for yourself. I am glad that I experienced it for myself, let me tell you. Sean Penn, you should do more movies.

Pretty in Pink

JFA80SmOVIESo it may be a little taboo to bring this movie since John Hughes’ passing is still pretty fresh, but this was one of those movies that I had somehow missed when I was growing up. My wife exclaimed to me one day while discussing our childhood movies, “WHAT?! You haven’t seen Pretty In Pink and you consider yourself a child of the 80′s?!” So, lo and behold, I dove head first into neon colors and bangs to find a sweet and lovable movie that would have totally been one of my favorites as a young kid. I am sure everyone says this, but seeing as how I am 20 years late to this film I am excused, but I loved Duckie! I thought Jon Cryer was the best thing about this film. Molly Ringwald was just like I expected her to be: neurotic, weird, into her own thing, yet still mainstream enough to draw us in. And Andrew McCarthy as the confused “I-am-rich-and-snobby-yet-am-intrigued-by-this-lower-class-girl” boy was mediocre at best. In the end, I am glad that Duckie didn’t end up with Ringwald, that just wouldn’t fit with the characters; they are best friends until the end, not lovers. All in all, it was a nice trip back to the 80′s where sweet and corny were still cool and not “classic.”

Smart People

img_SmartPeople_1For the full write-up of what I thought about Smart People, feel free to click on through. Where would a summer be without your typical and quirky indie film that is sure to be the sleeper hit of the season…well, it hasn’t happened yet. I think I had high hopes with this film before my wife and I sat down to watch it and for some reason, whether it was the mediocre story, or the lackluster performances by the leads, it just left me feeling, “meh.” It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible, it was just an average film with some A-list actors that tried to be quirky and indie (whatever that is anymore) and ironic, but just ended up being boring. Thomas Hayden Church steals the movie for me and served to at least provide the movie with some much needed levity.

That’s it for my Summer In Review. I know there are quite a few films that came out earlier this summer that I missed due to my son being born, but don’t you worry, I will get caught up and complete my 2009 Summer Movie Season.

So, tell me, what did you see this summer that you liked/disliked? Was there something about any of my little reviews that you agreed or disagreed with?

Let me know what you think and we’ll see you next summer!

transformers-2-posterIt’s hard to review a sequel of a movie without constantly going back to the first one for comparison. A very experienced and professional movie critic will be able to objectively/subjectively review a movie in and of itself and review all of its merits based solely on what the movie was, not what it wasn’t compared to another one…

Being just a regular guy who loves movies, I can tell you this, this movie doesn’t come close to the first one in overall entertainment value. I did not enjoy myself at the theater as much as I did when I watched the first one. In comparison, this film is a lackluster attempt at a cash cow sequel.

Speaking in terms of this movie alone, I really didn’t like it. I really wanted to like it, I really wanted it to be enjoyable and worthwhile, I really wanted to see a successful sequel…and in the end, with those expectations, it failed.

It really failed. From the plot that bounces all over the place, to the horrible acting of the two main stars, to the over-cussing robots, to the absolutely inappropriate sexual humor and innuendos, even to the big CGI robot fights, I mean, it really failed. I couldn’t grab a hold of anything of substance throughout the entire film.

Alright, so the acting is bad but the fighting robots will be killer…nope. Oh well, at least the explosions and the action will be excellent…nope. At least the humor will be enough to carry the movie through, right? Nope.

I realize that my expectations going into the film may have been misplaced and unfair. A lot of people that I have talked to have said that the movie is more enjoyable if you walk into it expecting nothing. And while I am sure that’s true in some sense, I don’t like going into movies without any expectations. I want the movie, the director, the studio, the trailers, all of it, to build in me some sort of expectation…I like the expectation, it means that I am hoping for excellence. I don’t want a film to rely on me to expect nothing from it, that doesn’t give me any confidence in what they have put together.

In this version of Transformers we rejoin with Sam (Shia LeBeouf) as he prepares to go away to college, leaving behind his loony parents and his overly sexual girlfriend Michaela (Megan Fox) to pine over him. Sam is again called upon by the Autobots to help them save the world from an ancient Cybertron bad guy named “Fallen.” Let the action and the cussing and the slo-mo escapes from explosions ensue.

Along the way we are introduced to a number of new Autobots and Decepticons and some of the very reasons why this film failed. First, there are two new Autobots that I think are supposed to be ghetto twins who can’t read, who speak in street slang, and who have gold teeth…yes, I know, they are robots. Throughout the film, they are cussing, fighting with each other, using so much slang that you’d think they are high school students, and all the while, never really adding anything to the film. Their job was to stay with Sam and Michaela to protect them and what they really did was just waste screen time. I think it was just a cheap way to garnish laughs from the 15-17 crowd. On the other side of the battle, we are introduced to some new Decepticons, and the one that stood out to me the most as being completely silly is this little Radio Controlled Monster Truck that spoke in a Brooklyn accent that at one point was humping Megan Fox’s leg. I’ll let that one simmer in you for a bit before I go any further….

Why did Michael Bay try so hard to make this movie so modern? What’s the point of having robots from another planet speak and talk like teenagers? Is it as simple as him wanting to attract the largest audience he can? I know that teenagers spend money and account for most, if not all, of the box office earnings of a film, but is that worth sacrificing quality content for money? The obvious answer is of course, this is Hollywood. There’s nothing funny or entertaining about robots swearing and using sexually explicit jokes…alright, so maybe I laughed outloud when John Turturro was standing under Devastator’s “robot balls” and said “I am directly below the enemy’s scrotum” but that was it. I just can’t believe that this was marketed at a PG-13 audience, if I had a 13yr. old, I wouldn’t take them to see this. The opening scene with Megan Fox alone is worth keeping your kids away…in fact, any scene with her in it is worth censoring. Either due to her overly sexual appearance or her horrendous acting.

What was good about this film? The parents of Sam are a highlight for me. Casting aside the mom’s scene with the brownies, I thought they had an excellent role in this film and I was glad to see Michael Bay include them some more. Their banter with each other is priceless, it almost sounded ad-libbed a lot of the times. I think they add a great sense of relief to all of the chaos that is going on with the exploding robots and the life and death struggles. I also liked Sam’s new roomate at college, Leo, played wonderfully by Ramon Rodriguez, a crazy, girl-obsessed computer hacker who runs an Internet conspiracy site about, of course, robots. His fear and insanity throughout the entire movie was pretty funny and I thought, like Sam’s parents, he added some much needed levity at times when Transformers was taking itself too seriously.

If you are a fan of Transformers, then you will enjoy this movie. If you are looking to spend $9-$10 on a summer blockbuster popcorn flick where you don’t have to think or engage your mind at all, and you have approximately 2 and a half hours to spend, then you will like this film. But, if you are like me, and are hoping for a much better sequel to the first one, I think you will be severely disappointed.

Content Warning: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, language, some crude and sexual material, and brief drug material. If you are a parent wanting to take your younger teenager to this film, go watch it by yourself first and decide whether or not your child can handle it. I wouldn’t recommend it to young teenagers, or even teenagers in general. It’s too sexual for a fun-loving robot movie.

spielberg-bay-transformers

As we wait for the 2009 Summer Movie Season to begin with all of its excitement and big tentpole films, director Michael Bay posted a message to his official forum updating us on the status of one the biggest and most anticipated sequels, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

Bay held an invite-only screening in Hollywood of Transformers 2 and one of the invitees was none other than Steven Spielberg himself, who is producing the film, and this is what he had to say about the film (via Bay’s message board):

“Steven Spielberg sat next to me in a big 100 person theater at Sony today. There were 98 empty seats. The lights came up after we just watched my cut of Revenge of the Fallen. He turned to me and said ‘It’s awesome.’

“He felt this movie was better than the first – and probably my best, who knows – at this point in a movie you start to lose your objectivity. I just hope the fans like it. I’m going to start putting it in front of audiences in a few weeks – no you are not invited, yet.”

So, Steven Spielberg thought the movie was awesome?! I don’t know about you, but that adds a lot to what I think about the film. He’s one of my Top 5 Favorite Directors and I have genuinely loved all of the movies I have seen that he’s done. (with the exception of Indiana Jones 5, what a horror) I know he’s producing the film and has financial stake in the film, but still, for him to say that it’s awesome at this point says a lot about the film.

In an interview with MTV, Bay revealed how long the film will run:

“It’s four minutes longer than the last one,” explained Bay, saying that the runtime was locked. “So, go figure it out.”

The first Transformers was 143 minutes long so quick math tells me that this sequel will be…drumroll….147 minutes long. Boy, I hope they really use those 4 extra minutes wisely, because 4 minutes of crap can really change a movie.

As far as when we can expect to see the first full trailer, Bay says that it will be attached to X-Men Origins: Wolverine opening on May 1st.

Tuesday’s are obviously the day when ToC posts all of the trailers and TV spots we can get our hands on, and I know you all think you’ve already seen the Transformers trailer during the Super Bowl, but you haven’t, this is the full version. Not the full trailer, but the full TEASER trailer.
