I know I haven’t debuted a lot of details for Marvel’s upcoming film Thor and there’s a good reason: there hasn’t been anything of concrete value until now.
A lot of movie sites post every single bit of news about a movie, from the mundane to the amazing, but I don’t have the time nor want to bog you down with details and rumors and tidbits that may have no significance on the film at all. I hear about all of the happenings with films and pick and choose when I want to report it to you, my loyal Truth On Cinema readers.
Movie rumors run rampant on the internet and as fun as it is to dialogue about who should be cast as what and what storyline could be cool, I wanted to wait until we had some OFFICIAL casting news about Thor before I brought it to you.
The wait is over. Over the weekend, Nikki Finke reported and broke the news that Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (who you might recognize as George Kirk in Star Trek) will be donning the hammer in director Kenneth Branagh’s Thor.
I don’t know much about this guy but from what I saw from him in the first five minutes of Star Trek, I’d say he is a very good pick to play Thor. I have always been a big fan of casting relatively unknowns for an origin superhero film. I think it adds a bit of mystery and intrigue as to how it will turn out. Let’s say they would have cast Brad Pitt as Thor: can someone say Troy?
If you know anything about the Thor universe, and I don’t, or have access to Wikipedia, which I do, then you would know that Thor’s archenemy is none other than Loki. Many casting rumors have been out about who will be playing Loki, with most of them hinting at Josh Hartnett taking the lead, but today, Nikki Finke reported that British actor Tom Hiddleston will be suiting up to battle Thor.
There is one other casting rumor that I figure you might want to know about since her casting would add some serious credibility to an already unknown cast: the possible casting of Natalie Portman.
No one knows quite yet who she is rumored to be casting for but Screenrant’s own, “Natalie Portman Expert” Carl Lee, wrote an interesting article listing some of the female character possibilities for Portman to portray in the Thor world.
Thor will begin shooting in January and will hit theaters on June 17, 2011.
