In what has been an absolutely tiring merry-go-round of would-be actors vying for the starring role in Columbia Pictures’ franchise reboot of Spider-Man, we FINALLY get word of who will be shooting the spidey web at baddies….with teen angst.

Back in April we asked who you thought should play Spider-Man and the overwhelming response was that whoever he was going to be, he better be good and he better deliver! Back then, the list was full of younger contenders who would give us that “high school Peter Parker” that Marc Webb was looking for. Someone that could really deliver a character driven role of a teenager struggling with being both human and super.

Columbia Pictures has announced that British actor Andrew Garfield will dawn the red tights and swing into action on July 12, 2012 as the new Spider-Man. From the official press release, “Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.”

Marc Webb, the director of the darling (500) Days of Summer had this to say about the casting, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

In case you, like me, aren’t familiar with his work, here are some of his highlights: Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, he supposedly won a BAFTA (British version of Academy Awards) for his role in Boy A, and he will be starring in David Fincher’s upcoming The Social Network, the film about the guys who started Facebook.

So, what does this news do to your anticipation or lack thereof for Spider-Man? Can he pull it off and make you forget Spider-Man 3?

Everyday it seems like there’s another Spider-Man casting rumor, and it usually has something to do with whatever film is hot at the moment and whatever young twentysomething male is corresponding to said film. What helps the situation is if the male in question is relatively unknown and possibly only been in small Disney films that a handful of people have seen. And as soon as they release the “casting rumor” there’s another studio that’s quickly there to deny it. It’s becoming tiresome day in and day out with deciding on whether or not to publish the so-called casting rumors. So, instead of me trying to keep up with the names, I want to know what you think.

Just to get you up-to-date on who has been thrown into the casting carousel so far, here’s the breakdown:

(Reading from L to R) Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), Josh Hutcherson (Zathura, Bridge to Teribithia), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick, (500) Days of Summer), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe)

As you can see, they all are around the same age, the same look, and all are relatively off the radar (apart from Joseph Gordon-Levitt), but, will they work? Who do YOU want to see play Spider-Man?

According to their report, a production insider has confirmed that the storyline only calls for one villain, Dr. Curt Connors himself. Last week, UGO reported that Dylan Baker, who portrayed Dr. Connors, got a call from Sam Raimi about the project. Who knows what was said on the phone, but one doesn’t have to take too many guesses as to what they talked about. Until anything comes out officially, we’re going to continue to consider this story a rumor, but the idea of a more streamlined Spider-Man film with just a solitary villain is exciting.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the director of all of the Spider-Man films himself, Sam Raimi has admitted, evidently after the fuss I have been making about it, that the amount of villains did in fact ruin the 3rd film in the franchise. From the man himself:

“I think having so many villains detracted from the experience. I would agree with the criticism,” he said in the print edition of DVD & Blu Ray Review, as reported in The Coventry Telegraph.

It’s very encouraging to hear the director of the Spider-Man films admitting to the faults in his movie. Spider-Man 4 is automatically looking better due to his admission.

Discussion: I am not a fan of her and never have been, so this news doesn’t excite me really, but I guess for continuity, it makes sense. How do you see her fitting into the new movie?
