Superman Sequel Delayed

Movie News (8/19/2008): With The Dark Knight breaking every record known to man, and the fact that it’s a sequel of a franchise “reboot” (Batman Begins being the poster child), the executives at Warner Bros. are in turmoil of what to do with their other famous superhero, Superman. Superman Returns was highly regarded as a noble misfire with very mixed reactions and only moderate box-office numbers and the rush to put out a sequel has long since been delayed and while the studios are hard at work figuring out what the next move will be, one exec at Warner Bros. was quoted as saying, “…it might be better to start from scratch…”

I remember seeing Superman Returns and enjoying myself, but not being totally blown away. The fan boy in me was willing to give it an automatic 4 stars just because I wanted to see the man in the red cape again, but the movie itself with its topsy-turvy script and an underwhelming performance by Superman himself, was nothing to write home about.

Are you eagerly awaiting a sequel? Does it deserve a sequel or a franchise reboot? What would a franchise reboot look like? Who would re-play Superman?

New W Posters

Movie News (8/15/2008): Film School Rejects has brand new HIGH RES posters from Oliver Stone’s next picture entitled, “W” which stars Josh Brolin as President George W. Bush. Ironically, these posters are located in Denver which is where the Democratic National Convention will be held in late August.

Do you think this will be a legitimate tongue-in-cheek look at Bush’s presidency, or just Stone’s platform to belittle the Republicans and/or the government?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Delayed

Movie News (8/15/2008): In news that’s causing major uproar in the Harry Potter world, Warner Bros. has announced that they are going to delay the release of the 6th Harry Potter film until July 17th of 2009! Its originally scheduled air date was supposed to be November 21st of this year, but due to many reasons, it’s being pushed back to next summer. Warner Brothers’ COO Alan Horn has said, “…like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films, changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move Half-Blood Prince to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Does his statement sound like a political spin machine or what? A lot of rumors are flying around about Warner Bros. having too many movies under their wing, especially after New Line Cinema and Warner Independent folded underneath them and into their fold. Whatever the major reason is, the Harry Potter fans have already started an online petition found here. I’ve never seen any of the movies in the theaters so I don’t know what it’s like, but I can’t see this movie fitting in the summer movie season. Can you? Thoughts? Opinions?

Kung-Fu Panda 2

Movie News (8/14/2008): Anytime a movie makes a lot of money, the talk of sequels inevitably ALWAYS comes up. In this case, it’s talk of a Kung-Fu Panda sequel that, ironically, was rumored to be in development only a week after it debuted, that’s surfaced. In an interview done with Yahoo! Movies, Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, has stated that, “…we’ve started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we’ll be able to talk completely about that.”

I have yet to see Kung-Fu Panda but have heard great things about it. Is it worth another movie? Was the ending conclusive enough, or was it open for a possible sequel?

J.J. Abrams Developing An Earthquake Movie

Movie News (8/12/2008): Famed Alias and Cloverfield creator J.J. Abrams‘ next movie that he will produce and help write will be an earthquake disaster film with David Seltzer. It’s not going to be a remake or revamp of the 1974 Charles Heston classic Earthquake, but it will be a Cloverfield-esque disaster movie where “relationships will be at the core.”

I know that there’s a lot of controversy surrounding Abrams (especially here at ToC) so I was wondering if this news excites you? I have to admit that I liked Cloverfield and how it was about characters and their relationships if not more than the monsters, so I am expecting that kind of relational-chemistry to be brought to this movie…but I know I may be alone on this one. How do you guys feel about his love for the supernatural and for destruction?

Movie News (8/4/08): It appears that the rumors last week of Johnny Depp being considered for the role of the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s upcoming adaptation of Alice in Wonderland are indeed true, according to a local newspaper in England where the film is shooting.

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter? Is anyone else surprised that he would team up with Tim Burton? And in case you are wondering who is going to play Alice, below is a picture of the Australian actress chosen to portray her, her name is Mia Wasikowska.

Robocop Not Sequel, But Reboot

Movie News (7/30/2008): It just goes to show you how fast movie news changes and how quickly rumors become just that, rumors…MTV News has the official word on what the new Robocop movie will be from the producers themselves…

“None of [the earlier films are] going to be canonical, as a matter of fact. I wouldn’t say it’s a direct sequel” says Brad Fischer of the project due out in 2010.

Terminator Salvation Poster

Movie News (7/30/2008): The first teaser poster for next summer’s Terminator sequel Terminator Salvation has gone online and ToC has the exclusive first look.

This poster looks awesome! The texturing done on the face is so gritty and an awesome lead in to how this film will resemble, a more gritty, raw, realistic look at the rise of the machines and the fight to save mankind. What do you think?
