I thought since it’s almost the end of the day on a Friday that I would put together a little list of movies that you should try to see this weekend, just in case you’re looking for some options:

For those of you that live in a hole that happens to be under a rock and haven’t heard, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opened on Wednesday! The movie is getting strong reviews as a movie by itself and it’s being heralded as the best Harry Potter film ever. As a newcomer to the Harry Potter scene, this will be my first HP movie on the big screen…and it looks not to disappoint.

The “anti-romcom” film that’s sweeping the nation starring the darling Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt opens today in select theaters. If there’s a movie that’s received more hype and press and marketing buzz than Harry Potter or Twilight, I think this is the one. From the amazing soundtrack, to the quality of actors, to the unique and creative story, I can’t wait to see this film.

One of my close friends just saw this movie and has raved and raved about it. He said that the story flowed well and that the acting was spot on. Those are pretty vague descriptors of a movie, but from what I can gather from his reaction is that he didn’t know what to expect when he walked in and so when he walked out, he was pleasantly surprised. It stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph with direction from the great Sam Mendes.

This movie has been out for a while but I’m afraid you will miss its genius if you’re not reminded about it again. If you have seen the trailer and dismissed it as just another “Iraq war movie” then let me tell you: you’re wrong! There is something so surreal and yet very raw about the way this film puts you in the middle of the action with no safe place to go. In the realistic vein of how raw Saving Private Ryan was, The Hurt Locker will leave you tense.

There you have it folks. I hope you enjoy your Weekend Movie Extravaganza and remember, whatever you see, come back to Truth On Cinema and let us know what you thought!

summer-preview

Our 2009 Summer Movie Preview was quite large, so we decided to split it up into two posts. The first one previewed the films coming out in May and June, and this part will feature all of the films debuting in July and August.

July

Public Enemies | July 1, 2009

public_enemiesThis is the coveted “July 4th” spot, once held by Hancock, Independence Day, and many other big-budget action films. To me, July really kicks off the most intense part of the summer as far as movies are concerned, and Public Enemies is our first course. Johnny Depp couldn’t be any hotter right now starring as 30′s bank robber John Dillinger, alongside the other “couldn’t-be-hotter” cast mate Christian Bale, who plays his FBI pursuer. Early reports have said that this may re-invent the classic crime movie, and some have even compared it to the likes of The Untouchables. This is definitely a must see!

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince | July 15, 2009

first-look-harry-potter-andIt’s about time. After finally finishing the books last summer and catching up on all of the previous films, I am ready to see the next Harry Potter. As anyone knows who has read the books, things start (or have already started) to get very dark and scary for Harry and his pals, which makes the PG rating this film received very peculiar. Next to the last book, Deathly Hallows, this book is the DARKEST one of them all, and I can’t understand why the MPAA gave it a PG rating. I hope that they can retain the intensity from the book in this film, because without it, this will be a huge letdown. Nevertheless, I will see you in line with the rest of the horde’s of HP fans.

500 Days of Summer | July 17, 2009 (limited)

84146096MH001_500_Days_Of_SAgain, this is a film that many of you will not see because you simply do not know about it. I am here to tell you about 500 Days of Summer so that there will be no excuse come July 17th. This was one of the big success stories to come out of the Sundance Festival this year, as many are already hailing this film as 2009′s Juno. Many comparisons will be made due to its “indie-feel” though it really isn’t an indie film, and it’s quirky story…which “isn’t a love story, it’s a story about love.” The great Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star as two young twentysomethings, Deschanel, a woman who doesn’t believe true love exists, and Levitt, the boy who falls for her. Like I said about Brothers Bloom, find out where this film is being played and go see it.

Adam | July 29, 2009 (limited)

adam_filmstill1I first wrote about this film last week and tried to get the word out so you wouldn’t miss this. Here I am again, screaming from the rooftop: please, make time to see this film. If I am wrong and it turns out to be a weak and trite story, I am sorry. But, from what I can discern from the trailer and what I am hearing, you won’t be let down.

Funny People | July 31, 2009

funny_people_movie_posterAdam Sandler never ceases to amaze me in how flexible he is in the movies he does. He can be an idiot specializing in physical comedy (Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy), he can turn on the charm and awkwardness and woo the ladies (Spanglish, 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer), and he can get all emo and sad (Reign Over Me, Punch Drunk Love)…and in Funny People, it looks like he has found the perfect role: he gets to be a comedian who faces tough life situations and has to overcome them with help from his friends. That actually sounds A LOT like all of his movies. If you can believe it there is actual Oscar Buzz going around about this film. Don’t let my sarcastic description keep you away though. This film looks like a really heartfelt and great film for the summer.

August

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra | August 7, 2009

gi-joe-char-poster-3I am only mentioning this film because I know that there are some younger readers who will not be let down by this piece of garbage film that will TOTALLY make a mockery of a cherished 80′s cartoon and action series. Seriously, when I first heard about this film last year, I legitimately was excited, but after the first teaser debuted, I was done. All I have to say about this film: There’s a WAYANS brother in it, and it’s NOT a Scary Movie 10. To G.I. Joe: I loved you when I was a kid growing up. But I can’t watch you be decimated.

Julie & Julia | August 7, 2009

julie-julia-movie-03Amy Adams and Meryl Streep star in this film about two memoirs: Julie Powell’s “Julie & Julia” and Julia Child’s “My Life in France.” Two ladies living in two very different time periods, both chefs, and both at their wits end with life. I didn’t see Doubt, though I want to, so I am not sure about their chemistry (Adams and Streep) but from what I can tell, this looks like a movie my wife will want to see. I am a huge Amy Adams fan and can respect Meryl Streep for what she’s done, but I won’t go see this one…unless my wife asks me to.

District 9 | August 14, 2009

482Back a long time ago, if you can remember, there as going to be a Halo movie, and Peter Jackson was involved. That alone should have pumped you up beyond belief, BUT, nevertheless, it never happened and the idea, for the time being, is on lock down. The rumored director of the never-to-happen Halo movie was Neil Blomkamp, who has directed this little sci-fi romp. What really intrigues me here is that it’s the aliens are being tracked and hunted, not the humans. Don’t hear me wrong: there is nothing little about this film. Not a lot of material has come out about it except for a very mysterious trailer, and with Peter Jackson producing, the buzz has quickly reached “greatness” levels.

Inglorious Basterds | August 21, 2009

inglorious_basterdsClosing out the summer is Quentin Tarantino’s crazy WWII epic starring Brad Pitt and a slew of other really cool actors. I will agree with Philip from Atomic Popcorn and say that I am a man who considers Quentin Tarantino to be overrated. Putting aside my minority opinion, this movie looks like it’s going to be awesome-ly violent! I won’t take my wife to see this one, but I will go with my Dad.

I hope you enjoyed this year’s Summer Movie Preview. Be sure to let us know what movies you see this summer and what you thought of them. Who knows, I may even post it as an official Truth On Cinema Review.

Ever since I finished reading the Harry Potter novels last summer, I have been anxiously awaiting finally seeing one of the films on the big screen. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be the next installment to be showcased in theaters and it just so happens to be one of my most Anticipated Movies of the Summer.

We have brought you posters, character shots, teaser trailers, release date changes and the aftermath, and a lot of other tidbits of news surrounding this film. As we get closer and closer to the start of the Summer Movie Season, you can expect to see an increase in footage and marketing promos for Harry Potter. With all of the backlash Warner Bros. Pictures received when they changed the release date to July of this year, they have been doing a lot of great promotional work for the film in hopes of offering a peace treaty to the fans. They’ve done a good job of making sure to keep Harry Potter in the news and to wet our appetites with posters, teasers, character one-sheets, etc.

Instead of trying to divide every piece of news about the movie that has come out, I thought that I would compile them all in this one concise update.

A couple of weeks ago we brought you a few character shots from the newest Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which were pretty unexciting and didn’t really help ease my anticipation for the next film. I am still reeling over the giant delayed release date moving from the Harry-Potter-typical November to the action-packed July.

But, today we are proud and excited to bring you 6 new killer character posters that are slick, bright, and really add to the hype surrounding the 6th installment of the Harry Potter franchise.

I am feverishly awaiting to see this movie this summer as it will be my FIRST Harry Potter film to see in an actual theater. After reading all of the books this past summer, I am glad that this is the one that starts my “Harry Potter In The Theater” experience. As anyone who has read the books knows, this is one of the darkest and most intense books of the series and I am really looking forward to the more adult-themed situations and action.

What do you think of these bright and slick posters?

And from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

What do you think of these new pics? What other summer movies are you interested in seeing artwork from? What summer movies are you most excited to see?

Some of the first photos are surfacing from filming of a movie that is still a year and a half away, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The book has been broken up into 2 parts set to be released in Nov. 2010 and summer 2011. That may seem like a long way off, but don’t despair because Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is on its way this summer on July 17.

[Reporter's Note: I'm posting this in the interest of movie news because I honestly don't care about Harry Potter. I watched 5 minutes of the first one and shut it off.]

Who is interested in Harry Potter? Have the adaptations been true to the books? Are you excited about the conclusion of the series or are you sad to see it go?

Warner Bros. have finally released some teaser posters for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. These posters look amazingly dark and brooding, which, if you’ve read the books, is exactly what this book’s story is about.

What I Think About Harry Potter

I can’t wait to see this movie in the theaters. I have only seen the previous 5 films on DVD and after reading the books this past summer, I am anxiously looking forward to experiencing Harry Potter on the big screen.

I fought for a long time that I wouldn’t cave to the main stream pressure of Harry Potter-dom, but after a couple of arousing recommendations from good and quality friends, I thought I would let my pride down and give it a shot. After successfully completing the series over a course of the entire summer, I finally saw why they were so popular. J.K. Rowling is a wonderful story teller in my opinion. I was glued to every page of every book. I had always passed “kids and wizardry” off as hokey and cheesy, a more “kiddy” version of Lord of the Rings, but once I moved past the ignorance and let myself become engrossed into the story, I was blown away.

When I reported back in August that this film would be delayed until the summer of 2009, there was a TON of backlash from the long-time fans. Every fan, from what I understand, was used to looking forward to the holiday season when the newest Harry Potter film would warm and fill their “feel good” tummies, so the news of having to wait 8 months for the next installment was not taken well. A lot of people speculated that because of the popularity and subsequent release of Twilight this past holiday season, that Hollywood, and more importantly Warner Bros. studios, didn’t want to compete with the new “teenage vampire flick.” Some were calling Twilight the “Harry Potter for teenagers” while others just assumed, which is probably the case, that Warner Bros. wanted to add Harry Potter to its already tent-pole collection of releases this summer. (Watchmen, Terminator:Salvation, Harry Potter)

Let me know what you think about them. If you aren’t into Harry Potter, do these posters intrigue you, excite you, make you at least curious?

Over the holidays, Entertainment Weekly released some never-before-seen photos from some of the most anticipated movies of 2009. From left to right, we have a new shot of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in X-Men Origins:Wolverine, Pixar’s next animated adventure Up, a new shot of Harry and Ginny from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (one of my most anticipated films of 2009), a shot of The Comedian from the much anticipated Watchmen film, and finally we have 2 new shots of Christian Bale as John Connor in Terminator Salvation and Johnny Depp as John Dilinger in Michael Mann’s upcoming action thriller Public Enemies.

You can check out the full gallery here which include many more films that didn’t quite make the ToC cut. Though, with one exception, Spike Jonze’s upcoming film Where The Wild Things Are, that one is very interesting to me, and one that I can’t wait to see. The photos aren’t amazing nor do they blow me away, but it’s nice to have some images to start out 2009 with…especially from films I am really looking forward to seeing.

What do you think?

Movie News (8/15/2008): In news that’s causing major uproar in the Harry Potter world, Warner Bros. has announced that they are going to delay the release of the 6th Harry Potter film until July 17th of 2009! Its originally scheduled air date was supposed to be November 21st of this year, but due to many reasons, it’s being pushed back to next summer. Warner Brothers’ COO Alan Horn has said, “…like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films, changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move Half-Blood Prince to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Does his statement sound like a political spin machine or what? A lot of rumors are flying around about Warner Bros. having too many movies under their wing, especially after New Line Cinema and Warner Independent folded underneath them and into their fold. Whatever the major reason is, the Harry Potter fans have already started an online petition found here. I’ve never seen any of the movies in the theaters so I don’t know what it’s like, but I can’t see this movie fitting in the summer movie season. Can you? Thoughts? Opinions?

Movie News (7/29/2008): The first teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will go online tonight at 9pm EST, but USA Today has revealed the first pictures of young Tom Riddle (aka Voldemort), who is being played by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, the nephew of Voldemort himself Ralph Fiennes. Along with the picture of Tom Riddle, USA Today also has an awesome action shot of Dumbledore.

I can’t wait to see this movie and continue on our trek of reading through and watching all of the Harry Potter films.
