As we wait for the 2009 Summer Movie Season to begin with all of its excitement and big tentpole films, director Michael Bay posted a message to his official forum updating us on the status of one the biggest and most anticipated sequels, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

Bay held an invite-only screening in Hollywood of Transformers 2 and one of the invitees was none other than Steven Spielberg himself, who is producing the film, and this is what he had to say about the film (via Bay’s message board):

“Steven Spielberg sat next to me in a big 100 person theater at Sony today. There were 98 empty seats. The lights came up after we just watched my cut of Revenge of the Fallen. He turned to me and said ‘It’s awesome.’

“He felt this movie was better than the first – and probably my best, who knows – at this point in a movie you start to lose your objectivity. I just hope the fans like it. I’m going to start putting it in front of audiences in a few weeks – no you are not invited, yet.”

So, Steven Spielberg thought the movie was awesome?! I don’t know about you, but that adds a lot to what I think about the film. He’s one of my Top 5 Favorite Directors and I have genuinely loved all of the movies I have seen that he’s done. (with the exception of Indiana Jones 5, what a horror) I know he’s producing the film and has financial stake in the film, but still, for him to say that it’s awesome at this point says a lot about the film.

In an interview with MTV, Bay revealed how long the film will run:

“It’s four minutes longer than the last one,” explained Bay, saying that the runtime was locked. “So, go figure it out.”

The first Transformers was 143 minutes long so quick math tells me that this sequel will be…drumroll….147 minutes long. Boy, I hope they really use those 4 extra minutes wisely, because 4 minutes of crap can really change a movie.

As far as when we can expect to see the first full trailer, Bay says that it will be attached to X-Men Origins: Wolverine opening on May 1st.

  • I liked the first movie. I thought it was good. But as for the second, I’ll just have to wait and see. Speilberg’s stamp of approval helps a little, but I am sure that he’s liked other movies that have flopped…we all have!

this trailer looks way worse than the first, if that’s even possible.

and come on, you really buy that marketing hype? of course they say he loved it. that’s done to get you to want to see it. if they said he turned to bay and said that it sucked, it would hurt their box office.
