The big news from the weekend is confirmation that Dakota Fanning will be joining the cast of New Moon, the sequel to last year’s Twilight. Rumors of this casting move have been floating around since January as previously discussed here at TOC. This may be a legitimate casting move, but it also may just be an attempt to add some level of star power to the series that has definitely been underwhelming so far.
Also of note, it was announced last week that Fanning will and her New Moon co-star Kristen Stewart will be teaming up again next year for the rock band bio-pic Runaways.
I’m far from being a Twilight fan – in fact I know relatively nothing about it. So, Twilight fans unite and tell us what you think of this move. Is it true to the books or does it seem like another Hollywood publicity stunt? Is there hope for this franchise or was Twilight too big of a disappointment? Why is every other book in the young adult section at Barnes and Noble a Vampire romance??

Ok so from a huge Twilight fan…I think that she would make an excellent Jane so that is a great decision for the authenticity of the book.
To comment on the fact that young adults are obsessed with vampires- you are so right! A lot of my 9th grade girls are constantly bringing in their vampire books, talking about the fantasy behind it and the thrill. Personally I myself went through a vampire thing when I was in high school and apparentally picked it back up as an adult. There is just something about getting lost into the romantic, passionate, albeit deadly, thrill of vampires…I guess you have to be a girl to understand….=)

What I understand, listening to different women talk about their love of Twilight and vampires alike, is that it’s the seduction value that is intriguing. It’s the fact that vampires are out to seduce you as a woman, and in some weird recess of your subconscious, that’s alluring.
No?
