dark-knight-posterThere has been so much talk out in the Movie Blogosphere about The Dark Knight not being nominated for the Best Picture or Best Director award at this year’s Oscars, that this news may not even excite people.

According to Movieweb, Michael Uslan, executive producer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight told New Jersey’s Courier-Post that The Dark Knight sequel is expected to hit theaters in 2011:

Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the “Dark Knight” sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman’s supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. “It’s one of those deals where if I told you, I’d have to kill you,” he says with a chuckle.

It’s nice to hear some news coming out from an official source, someone who is ACTUALLY attached to the franchise, but Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, nor even Gary Oldman has been confirmed to return…but rest assured, they will be back.

  • Very excited.
You mentioned love interest and I was surprised because I hardly even remembered the Rachel Dawes character, which is nice because the early movies were so over the top in the romance dept.

I really hope they focus very little on the love interest aspect of the Batman world. Of all of the superheros or comic book creations, I don’t need Batman to have a love interest.

The love interest character is usually needed to remind the audience of the hero’s humanity. The ability for the hero to love someone or yearn for someone is supposed to somehow help us as an audience connect with him/her. To me, personally, in a lot of movies, they get in the way and become a hindrance to the main story arc that I am dying to see be developed.

Take, for instance, the Mary Jane character of Spiderman. I have never liked her and always wanted her to be killed to allow Peter to concentrate fully on his role, his calling…though I am sure someone will debate me on that point with some historical comic book lore. Bring it on!

    • alright I’ll take the plung, yes Mary Jane has the same effect in the comic. She is in the way of Spidey being more. He’s always worried about her and Aunt May. They do get married so I guess that’s cool and from what I remember he does share who he is with M.J.

And I’ve always like Kirsten Dunst, ever since her role in Interview with a Vampire.

    • I think that these relationships are key for Spiderman. They keep us grounded to the reality that Peter Parker is a wussy nerd. If he were always saving the day, we could start seeing him as a Batman type figure. Having something holding him back keeps us from forgetting who he really is. They don’t make him that way, but they do remind us of it.

@Ryan and Troy, I know that she is there to remind us that he’s human and in fact a nerd, but we all know that the hero can never truly have his love. We go into a movie knowing that the bad guy is ALWAYS going to use the love interest against the hero.

I know I am fighting a winless battle, but still, I think we could come up with a comic book hero that is human in and of himself, who doesn’t need a love interest to get in his way.

  • Is it really a sequel? Or would it be the third in the new Batman trilogy?

    • Dan

Well, I guess it would be considered the third in the trilogy, but everything I am reading calls it the sequel. Maybe all of us movie bloggers are wrong collectively.

  • now onto a comment on the sequel or third. Looking forward to it. Hopefully it’ll be able to hold up to Dark Knight. I’m not so up on my batman villains, who would everyone like to see be the villain in it? May have to do some wiki research reading to see who I think.

  • Dan, I’m diggin your new comments system.

    • Dan

Thanks dude. I really like the idea of threading comments, so people know who they are talking to without having to always write “@NAME.”

Even though I just did it up there…I’m still getting used to it.

And by the way, this isn’t any clever comment styling by me, this is WordPress 2.7′s default comment system.
