Movie News (9/11/2008): In news that I’m sure will cause some controversy, Warner Brothers is reporting that they are re-releasing The Dark Knight in IMAX theaters in January, just in time for the Oscars. With The Dark Knight’s current domestic box office total pushing $513 million, it’s obvious that Warner Brothers wants to shoot for that $600 million mark in order to potentially beat Titanic. This re-release is also timed to tie in with the voting season for the Academy Awards, both to highlight the film during that time to remind voters and to capitalize on any buzz from nominations.

Discussion: For me, this is great news! I saw it in the theaters 3 times and never got to experience the IMAX version, so I will gladly drop ten more dollars to see it in January…and just in time for my birthday! HINT HINT! There are also speculative reports saying that Warner Bros. would like to re-release the movie every year as like an event. Does it have the buzz still to push past Titanic? With the DVD release coming out in December, will people be less interested in going to the theaters and just purchase the DVD? Will you go see it in January?

  • eesh, I don’t know what to think on this one. I realize the December release is most certainly for Christmas presents, so that will make for good sales. I think that an Oscar reminder is a genuinely good idea. But, I’m not sure that the revenue will really justify the plan.
    Re-releasing to big screen every year??? I don’t know about all that.
    You want me to go back and see it? Give me 10-15 more minutes of new footage (yeah, I know it’s already long, but I’ve got to be getting something extra out of it).

    Is that a hint to your Mom??8-).no really..I agree with Ryan..maybe if they added something to the movie, it would make it worthwhile to go.
    Are you saying they are releasing the movie to DVD in December? Great..I just got some additions to my Christmas list for my family.

  • Dan

    Yup, the movie will be out on DVD just in time for Christmas, a smart move no doubt.

    @Ryan, that’s an interesting take, extra footage. What scene or storyline would you like to see more of?

  • didn’t have anything in particular in mind, just think that they need something to add value and increase the draw.

  • I just think its an attempt to keep Heath Ledger before the voters. I seriously doubt that in the next 5 months, that it could generate another $80+ million to overtake Titanic. Just dont see that happening.

    If this movie leaves the Oscars without any awards, then the Oscars are rigged…oh wait…I think that they already are rigged! But who am I to say that?

  • Dan

    @Scott, cue the conspiracy theorists!

  • Dont worry… I cued ‘em!
