screamWhether you like it or not, Scream 4 is happening. According to Bloody Disgusting, Dimension Films, the studio that put out all 3 of the previous films, have hired Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two films, to pen the first draft of this “restart” of the Scream horror franchise. The quality of the draft and time will tell if his script will ultimately be the shooting script. Wes Craven may return as the director, but if not, he will at least get a producing credit.

The current idea for the story is that they want to restart the Scream franchise with a younger cast. I’m talking a glossy Gossip Girl-esque teeny horror movie that we’ve all seen before. It makes sense in this current market to start it over, but that isn’t news that gets me at all excited about seeing this. To assuage the older fans, (if they still exist) the studio is in negotiations with original cast members, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette to return and make cameos in the film. I am not sure that will be enough to gain a new audience for Scream.

The movie may also be fast tracked for Halloween 2009. Scary? Are you interested? Any of this sound enticing?

  • Yeah, so, I loved the first two and endured the third. Bring back the writer/director duo and I may be on board.
I’m even ok with a restart concept so long as we’re starting from scratch and firmly rooted in reality (as it were). That is what the first batch of films had going for it. No Freddy in your dreams or Jason who can’t die. No crazy apparitions or spider-like stair walking. Just some crazy guys with an attitude. That’s what made the originals good and what will make this one work.

Yeah Ryan, I actually enjoyed the first one when it came out. It’s funny to watch it now and laugh at the violence that then seemed really scary and intense.

I wish horror movies would just stick to really messed up people, not ghosts or mists or hockey players or dream killers, just good ole’ fashioned psychos.

I liked the first one…and honestly didn’t watch the second all the way through. I obviously never made an effort to see the other one. I am not a horror fan at all but I know it has it’s place among the movie world. Thanks for the info!
