Take everything you read in this post with a grain of salt, but, it’s being reported by industry insider MarketSaw that Spider-Man 4 will feature only one villain: The Lizard.
According to their report, a production insider has confirmed that the storyline only calls for one villain, Dr. Curt Connors himself. Last week, UGO reported that Dylan Baker, who portrayed Dr. Connors, got a call from Sam Raimi about the project. Who knows what was said on the phone, but one doesn’t have to take too many guesses as to what they talked about. Until anything comes out officially, we’re going to continue to consider this story a rumor, but the idea of a more streamlined Spider-Man film with just a solitary villain is exciting.
What do you think about all of this? Patrick, being our Truth On Cinema Comic Book Junkie, what say you?

Called it. Well actually anyone who knew Connors becomes Lizard would have done it, it is just logical.
S1 and S2 were good with their single villain style.
And in both those movies the villains are someone spidey knows and they are originally great people who become corrupted.
However, Connors has been around since S2 and his aide to spidey has been there for a while.
It will be interesting to see how much more they emphasize his original character into his change as the lizard, being that he is not new.
Honestly though, an overall opinion of comic book movies, is if directors would stick to the original plots of the first and maybe second series comics, it would all go great.
For the most part when directors and writers decide to get creative with their changes, the movie suffers.
Example: Xmen Origins: Wolverine… This movie made me so angry in so many changes. I could go on 20 different rants of how Gavin Hood screwed a potentially amazing movie over with his changes to the comics.
My prediction, is Raimi will play it safe here to win back his audience and Lizard is a good choice for that. Plus they could NOT have Connors be in a 4th movie as another side character, because then he seems irrelevant. Waiting 3 movies til he becomes his villainous (sp?) Lizard form was long, 4 movies would be stupid.
Lizard does offer some conflict for Spidey, as Connors and Parker are good friends and Connors is a great mentor to Peter. I believe Peter knows that Connors is Lizard the entire time, and that there is no late discovery of his foes identity but i wouldnt be surprised if that changed.
All in all, i think Raimi is playing it safe and smart with Lizard (maybe not my favorite choice, but after the failure of S3, probably the most intelligent) and he should (and i think will) for the most part stick to the original plotlines of Lizard and Spidey with a few changes, for the sake of the movie, along the way. I dont think this will be the next Ironman or Dark Knight, but who knows? Comic book movies tend to be Epic Win or Epic Lose these days.

I hope and beg them not to have more than one villain. It’s really hard to do right, and if it’s done wrong it makes the film a jumbled mess of legs, arms and teeth. the best comic book movies only have one villain (see Batman, Superman) while the new Batman movies are the exception rather than the rule.

And while this news was pretty solid when it came out, there is new information out there suggesting that John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway are being seriously considered for the roles of “The Vulture” and “The Vulturess” respectively.
More on this later…
