In news that can only be described as “huh?!” word has come down from THR (via /Film) that the lovely Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to star opposite Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, that’s set to open in the summer of 2011.
There is absolutely no indication of who she will play or how involved her character will be, all we get is that “she is to be Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways.” That kind of sounds like Keira Knightley’s character Elizabeth Swann, but right now, it’s just a hunch. All in all, my first reaction to this news is not a good one. With Rob Marshall directing and now having his former Nine star Cruz join him, I’m afraid we’re going to see some singing and dancing numbers performed on the Black Pearl! I can see it right now: Jack Sparrow arm locked with his fellow pirates and Cruz kicking in sync to “Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.”
Alright people, what do you think? Can this work? Help me see a way this will work.
