I haven’t written anything about this remake because frankly I didn’t know how good it would be. There just are so many remakes coming out nowadays that it’s too hard to try and keep up. The original Clash of the Titans was made in 1981 and starred Harry Hamlin, Maggie Smith, Lawrence Olivier, and Jack Gwillim in a film adaption of the myth of Perseus and his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster to save the Princess Andromeda.
I remember seeing this movie as a kid and falling in love with the simple but effective special effects of the Kraken and Medusa and even the golden owl…but this is not your mother’s Clash of the Titans! This is a Clash of the Titans film in the era of 300, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, and Braveheart with fast action, rock music anthems, and sweeping CGI.
What do you think of the new remake? Is it ok that it’s a completely modernized version?

I’m actually not sure if this movie will be “better” than the original perse, but without the stop-motion animation it won’t be as groundbreaking. I actually blogged about this back in November http://geektwins.blogspot.com/2009/11/this-week-in-geek-11202009.html if you’re interested.

Mauricem, I agree that without the stop-motion effects, it doesn’t have the same “feel” as the original. It seems to me that more and more “remakes” or “remodernizations” of old classics are more about the movie studios not having a solid story to start from, more than it is a complete remake of an old classic.
It’s almost like they just need an old classic’s story to start from and then by the time the film is done, they’ve made a completely different film and it wouldn’t even be considered a remake anymore.
Good stuff! Enjoyed your blog, I like the niche of geek twins writing about sci-fi. Thanks for stopping by.
