With the onslaught of superhero movies in Hollywood that are constantly either being adapted from a comic book, rebooted from a franchise that is fairly new, or made into 10 sequels, it’s becoming increasingly harder to come up with different varieties of heroes. Jon Favreau, though, says that he has a secret weapon in Iron Man that sets his movie apart from the rest of the caped crusaders.

“The superhero genre has been picked over pretty thoroughly with all the different titles, sequels, reboots. It’s tough to keep it fresh and not do something that is derivative of something someone else has done. By taking a left turn at the end of the first film and making him a public figure, it opened it up to a whole lot of new possibilities. It goes beyond your standard secret identity/caped crusader model.”

In talking about the story and dealing with the expectations that come along with fame and fortune, “The rise of Ceaser — there are mythic proportions to that. Other genres tackle that type of story on a regular basis but the superhero genre has not, up to this point. We were able to deal with the ramifications of fame and notoriety and high expectations.” With the high publicity that Downey Jr. attracts everywhere he goes and the past issues that have come with being a celebrity, Favreau says that RDJ brought that into the mix of his portrayal of Iron Man.

“It allowed us to draw upon our experiences and certainly Robert’s experiences,” the filmmaker said. “Robert had strong points of view on these things. He was propelled quite publicly to a much more successful station and we were able to draw upon that. We were able to comment on the phenomena of celebrity as we know it today….There are only so many stories there. We’re flying in a different direction.

What do you think? How will Iron Man 2 fair at the box office? Will it be as loved and as big of a hit as the first on was?

  • I agree with Favreau 100%. My jaw dropped at the end of the film when he said, “I’m iron Man.” It sets him apart from 99.9% of all other superhero films and opens up unique opportunities for story development.

Maurice, I wonder what it’ll mean for all of the inclusions of the Avengers into all of the films. Any thoughts?

  • I think it means that Iron Man can pursue the other members openly: not by sneaking up to them and whispering, “I’m Iron Man and need your help.” He can walk up and say, “Hey, Hulk, get over here.” That said, I’m still skeptical they can pull off the “Avengers” movie. The number of stars to get in one film, the number of characters that need to be brought together, it just seems like a pipe dream right now. Look how long it’s taken, and how much blood, cash, and tears people have gone through, just to get Batman and Superman into the same movie. “Avengers” would be like that times six.
