I am a little behind on this news, but I didn’t want the Truth On Cinema readers to be in the dark for too long. Over the last couple of weeks, significant casting news has come out of the Iron Man 2 camp regarding the films’ villains.
The first big news to come out was that the main villain would be Crimson Dynamo and in negotiations to star is none other than the Wrestler himself, Mickey Rourke. From the Variety news article, Crimson Dynamo is described as Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit. So, that could be really cool, and it’s not a bad idea for Rourke to team up with Downey, that could make for an excellent combination.
The other news is that Sam Rockwell is slated to play Justin Hammer, corporate nemesis of Tony Stark. He will most likely by a secondary villain in the film as he is instrumental in the downfall of Tony in the comics, thus leading him into deep alcoholism and losing everything he has. I don’t know who Justin Hammer is, but I know Sam Rockwell, and I like the idea. I haven’t seen a lot of Sam’s movies, but from what I have seen, I’ve liked. I don’t know anything about the character of Hammer in the comics, so I’m going to need some of my comic junkies to sound off about him and if Rockwell would be a good cast.
Now, that would be news enough, that could make for an excellent news worthy day. That could also be the makings of a really great Iron Man sequel, with Rourke, who is on top of the world right now, and with Rockwell who adds a quirky greatness to most of the things he does, this could be good…BUT, there’s more.
News has just come out yesterday that Marvel Studios and director Jan Favreau are looking for the right actress to play the femme fatale Black Widow, another nemesis to Tony Stark. Emily Blunt, who you might know from The Devil Wears Prada, The Jane Austen Book Club, and Charlie Wilson’s War, is the front runner to star as Natasha Romanoff, the Soviet spy who doubles as the skin-tight-leather-bound Black Widow.
All of this villain news worries me a lot! All I can picture in my head is the train wreck that was Spiderman 3. I don’t want an Iron Man movie with 10 villains, as a matter of fact, I think 3 is too much at this point. What happened to Mandarin and his whole storyline? Where does the 10 Rings come into play? What are they doing?

This is the problem with creating a whole universe within 110 minutes. There’s so much to cover and so much expectation.
I think that X-Men handled this well by just “cameo-ing” known characters and then bringing them in more in later movies.

Do they even have a script? Sounds to me that they are setting themselves up for future movies. I like the XMen angle Ryan. I hope that’s what they are doing!
I am with you Dan…too many characters can be distracting and confusing for the movie.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens!
