Movie News (10/14/2008): According to comingsoon and the trades, reports are out that Marvel’s negotiations with Terrence Howard to reprise his role as Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man’s best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine, have failed. He has walked away from the Iron Man franchise and will be replaced by none other than Don Cheadle.

This is a great move to me. Though I’m not a big fan of changing actors midway through a series, in this case, I think it’s going to work out better. Terrence Howard is a great actor, but I think Don Cheadle is an even better actor. This news is exciting and only makes the sequel to Iron Man that much more of a blockbuster.

Discussion: What do you think about this move? Will this hurt the franchise? Can Don Cheadle fill the shoes of War Machine? If it wasn’t Don Cheadle, who would you see better filling that role?

  • I saw that this morning as well. Not real happy about it. I do think that Terrence Howard comes across as a little soft (something about his voice – and he was a little whiny). I think that Cheadle is a bit small to play a superhero – even one in a suit of armor.
I don’t really know a whole lot about war machine, but the pictures of Rhodes that I’ve seen from comics look a lot more like Howard than Cheadle.
Actually, I think he looks more like Billy D. Williams (from the 1970′s comic frames that I’ve seen). That would be an interesting fit.

  • Dan

Anytime Lando Calrissian can step into any role, he will automatically make it 10x better!

  • Don Cheadle…he should do fine. I like Howard, but I will be with Dan on this…I think that Cheadle will be fine addition to the franchise.

Who knows…if Cheadle doesnt work out…Denzel?? I mean how many times have you seen him in uniform…always a good movie with Denzel as an military officer!
