Where The Wild Things Are
opens nationwide this weekend with a lot of pre-screenings happening around the world and I wanted to have a place where you could come and discuss the movie. If You’ve Seen It
If you have already seen the film, then talk about what you thought. Was it everything it’s being made out to be? Did it stick to the children’s book well? Was Spike Jonze able to bring to the screen the kind of magical imagination that the book evokes? And please, if you want to discuss anything that could be considered a spoiler, add SPOILER ALERT before your comment.
If You Haven’t Seen It
Are you excited to see the movie? What about it draws you to the theater? Did you ever read the book? Do you think Spike Jonze will be able to pull it off? What other children’s book do you want to see made into a movie? When are you planning on seeing the film?
I am super excited to see WTWTA (if you’re cool, you abbreviate it). I have never read the book but everything I have seen from the film and from Spike Jonze, I have loved. Even the trailers do a remarkable job of stimulating the kid inside of me who longs to escape the 9-5 work world and just run through the forest pretending I am living with monsters. My wife and I are planning our next date night around seeing this movie. I hope you’ll be able to join us.

I am very excited about this, probably the most excited ive been for a movie since The Matrix Revolutions (i am a fan boy, and am not willing to let the 2nd movie sucking to stop my hopes for the 3rd)
) and am very excited about it.
I have been a big fan of Spike Jonze since i saw Fully Flared. Now Fully Flared is a skateboarding movie but most skating movies are very cookie-cutter and all seem to mesh. Fully Flared blew my mind not only as a skater but as a movie goer. Very well directed and taking some new views on old ideas.
I was read the book as a child and i can still remember bits, mainly because it wasn’t a book that just fell under a regular category. It wasn’t a repeat or something Dr.Seuss like, it stood out. (I loved that as a kid, cause i was a weird and nerdy kid)
I will probably being seeing this, this friday (wearing my WTWTA Lakai shoes

it’s hard for me to decide what I care less about – this film or Transformers 2 on DVD.

Are you just playing the shock jock?! Are you kidding me? How can you be less excited about this movie? What about it causes you to yawn?
Ryan, you have the floor.

Not really sure.
Just not my thing. I’m not a big fan of fantasy adventures – aside from Narnia. Certainly, I care less about Transformers 2 on DVD, but this film definitely falls into the realm of total apathy.

Is it because that Narnia has Christian elements/allegories that makes you put aside your disdain for fantasy adventures? So, if WTWTA was about a little Christ-like figure finding his way through a “monstrous” world, you might like it?
I am just trying to understand. As a cinema fan in and of itself, doesn’t the look and the feel of the film spark any interest?

No and No.
I just like Narnia. I like the adventure side of it far more than the allegory. I like that it is an immersive world akin to LOTR. It has a history all its own. I find it fascinating that someone can dream with that much detail.
I don’t find the look and feel of WTWTA interesting. I’m not a big fan of Creatures – even in the case of Narnia. This film doesn’t appeal to any childlike sensibilities that I have (of course when I was in 5th grade I thought wearing a tie and suspenders was cool, so). It looks heavy handed and forced, maybe it’s the browns and earth tones as opposed to Willy Wonka-esque technicolor.

Saw it yesterday and Wow. Just Wow.
First off, Soundtrack:
Karen O and The Kids could not have had a better matched soundtrack for this movie, best soundtrack i have heard since Slumdog.
Second, The Monsters:
I was worried to see how emotion would play into this, if it would be so light and fluffy and fake id hate it but no, spot on. It conveys some real messages and it is pretty down to earth and sad. NOT, a movie to take your kids to, because it isnt so happy go lucky and bright as like a pixar movie, it is kinda dark and there are some tear jerker moments.
Third, Max:
I have never seen this kid in any other movie, but he just matches that wild and crazy but still innocent feeling of max, spot on. Interacts with the monsters in a well illustrated way.
Fourth, The story:
Max spends the majority of the story with the Monsters and helping them, family times before and after are developed in a few brief, but well made scenes. I dont want to spoil anything for anyone, so i will leave it at that.
Overall, one of the better movies i have seen in quite a while.

I liked it except for i expected Katherin Keener to look hot. Also I could have done without all the kvetching from the couple Ira and ..? what ever her name was, it was a little too naggy for my liking. Also why do the monsters have to be so dirty looking? they could have made them slightly less ghoulish and cuter. There was no need for the giant nosed ones..and i didnt like the look of the bearded girl. thats just my opinion.
