There’s something so awesome about gritty crime dramas that take place in or around Boston. I think it was when I first saw The Departed that I fell in love with those genre of films. The accents, the city, the community aspect of the people of Boston, I love it all! As we begin talking about the 2010 Fall Movie Season, I think we may have found the next great crime drama.

If I say the name Ben Affleck, what do you think of? Probably Good Will Hunting, Kevin Smith movies, being in connection with Jennifer Lopez, and some pretty odd comedic roles. But, what you should think about more than his roles are his talents as a director. Though I haven’t seen it, I hear that his directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, was phenomenal and blew away everybody who saw it. I think I definitely love Affleck the writer-director probably a little more than Affleck the actor.

However you see or think about him, his next directorial film (in which he also co-wrote) is a Boston crime drama called The Town. I hear that it’s showing before the summer-savior Inception and it’s sticking with people through Nolan’s film. If you can’t make it to Inception to see the trailer, fear not, for Truth On Cinema has done it again and I have the trailer for you to see here.

Following the trailer is the official synopsis and release date for your viewing and scheduling pleasure.

Synopsis:

Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang’s latest job, when they briefly took a hostage–bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name… and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug….not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path.

The Town is in theaters September 17, 2010. The trailer is also available in HD here.

Must See: First Full Length Trailer For THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Not since August of 2008 have I published anything about the so-called “Facebook Movie” and to you, my reader, I apologize. Whether it was being too busy or not thinking you would be interested in it, I regret that I have not prepared you enough for this cinematic treat. Let’s forgive and forget and move on to a really fantastically creepy trailer about the creation of Facebook.

The film is called The Social Network and it is being directed by the great David Fincher and more importantly, the screenplay was adapted from the novel “The Accidental Billionaires” by Aaron Sorkin! That’s right, the great writer of Sports Night and Studio 60 has put his pen to the “Facebook Movie.” What does that tell you about the quality of the film? The tagline for the film is “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.” The tone looks dark and creepy and I love the opening music, it sets the tone for the entire trailer…creepy.

Must See: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer

I know we briefly showed you a fuzzy clip from the MTV Awards a few weeks back, but as of right now, forget you ever saw that! Warner Bros. has finally debuted the FIRST FULL trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

It’s a tad bittersweet really when I think about the Harry Potter series and this magnificent trailer. I love how epic and HUGE this feels and that the last book will be split into two films, but at the same time, it’s sad that it’s ending. The Harry Potter franchise has been a part of our cinematic culture for more than 10 years and the books have been such a literary hit, that it’s an end of an era.

What do you think? How will we be able to wait 5 more months?!

When they first started making Narnia films, I was afraid that they wouldn’t have the momentum to make it all the way to Book 3 – The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which is by far my favorite in the series. At the time, we were just coming off of the Lord of the Rings and right in the middle of Harry Potter. But, it looks as though they are going to continue with the series as long as their income surpasses their budget (which has to be huge).

The MTV Movie Awards happened on Sunday and besides annoying teeny jokes and useless banter about outdated celebrities, Warner Bros. debuted a BRAND NEW trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Just to catch you up on what’s happening, here’s the official synopsis:

Voldemort’s power is growing stronger. He now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore’s work and find the rest of the Horcruxes to defeat the Dark Lord. But little hope remains for them, so everything they do must go as planned.

Must See: Second ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ Trailer

Whatever you’re planning on doing this summer as far as movies go, make sure at least TWO things happen: 1) You make the time and the effort to see Christopher Nolan’s “Inception“, and 2) you do whatever it takes to see Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.”

Last week, Edgar Wright started an intense marketing campaign to get people to become “fans” of the film on Facebook and if it reached 100,000 fans, then he would release the 2nd full length trailer for all of us to enjoy! After a Memorial Day Weekend bonanza of fans lining up and lending their “hand” to the cause, we were rewarded with a brand new trailer that completely blows the first teaser trailer out of the water.

I’ve included the official synopsis below for those that are still scratching their heads as to what this movie is about.

Synopsis:

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

Film Exposure: The Adjustment Bureau

In another exciting installment of Truth On Cinema’s “Film Exposure,” we’re going to take a closer look at Matt Damon’s next film due out at the end of the summer called The Adjustment Bureau. What is this film about? Who are the bureau? What are they adjusting, and why is Matt Damon involved with Emily Blunt…or is he? And just what can we expect from a film adapted from a novel by “hit-or-miss” novelist Philip K. Dick? All those answers, and more, as we expose you to The Adjustment Bureau.

While we are all enjoying the hot summer in July of last year, word came out that Mr. Bourne himself would be rejoining his ole’ pal George Nolfi, who wrote the screenplay for both Ocean’s Twelve and The Bourne Ultimatum, on a political/sci-fi thriller known as The Adjustment Bureau. The film was being adapted from a novel “Bureau”, written by sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. All that was known about the story was that it follows a congressman (Damon) on his rise in the political realm, who meets a beautiful ballet dancer (played by the under-appreciated Emily Blunt), but then discovers mysterious circumstances that ultimately keeps them apart. Interested was piqued!

Following that announcement, in August they added cast member, fresh off the Best Picture win for The Hurt Locker, Anthony Mackie to the ensemble thus making the film seem a bit more interesting. Nothing had yet been seen from the film in terms of production shots or locations or even what the film looked like, but in December of 2009, we finally got to see our first glimpse into what style the film was going for in this image.

Originally the film was supposed to open this summer, sometime around July 30th, but Universal announced on April 28th that the film’s release was going to be pushed back to September 17, 2010, probably due to the competition already brewing in July by the name of Inception. That was probably a smart move since both films seem to dabble in the “fantastic” and with Christopher Nolan at the helm and already a monumental anticipation building for it, The Adjustment Bureau should find a nice audience in September.

Today is the day that we finally get to see some footage of the film by way of its first trailer. After watching the trailer, let me know what you think of the film and if it will make your summer schedule. I am definitely on board and can’t wait to see how this one plays itself out.

Must See: Trailer for George Clooney’s “The American”

As I said in my Top 24 Most Anticipated Films of 2010 about the film The American, if you give me George Clooney as an aging assassin with one more job to do, I’m in!

So the story doesn’t sound all that original, an aging assassin has one more job to do until he “quits the business” but then falls in love with a woman he either has to kill or who is somehow involved in his last “job”, but the aesthetic style of the film looks to be its saving grace. I am a big fan of Clooney’s work with slow-burning films and although I am new to the party of Anton Corbijn, this looks like a really cool film.

Must Watch: First Trailer for Jonah Hex

Like I promised in yesterday’s post about Jonah Hex, we have the official trailer for the revenge-thirsty western comic book film. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a comic book western: explosions, bad guys, accents, over-sexed bad actress, and oh yeah, gatling guns on horses!

I want to be really excited for Jonah Hex and who knows, it might actually turn out to be awesome, BUT, I just find the “out-of-the-world-ness” of the film to be laughable at best. GATLING GUNS ON HORSES?! Really? And Josh Brolin, who is terrifically amazing actor, sounds like a cross between a drunk Clint Eastwood and someone who is constantly chewing on a toothpick. I don’t know, watch the trailer tell me what you think in the comments.

Oprah Has Given Us a Brand New ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Trailer

In a weird marketing move by Summit Entertainment regarding their beloved Twilight franchise, the latest trailer for The Twilight Saga:Eclipse has debuted today by way of: the media behemoth known as Oprah. Huh?! I know you’re asking yourself the same question I did when I heard this news, “What does Oprah have to do with Twilight?” And the answer is: both of them attract and are loved by TONS of adoring women!

I know that’s a gross overstatement and I apologize to the 4% of men in the world who both love Oprah (gag) and Twilight as much as women do. My wife is a huge Twilight fan (read:”Twihard”) and has read and re-read the books a dozen times and gets exuberantly excited every time a new piece of footage is released from either Breaking Dawn or Eclipse. I am sure when she sees this trailer, her level of anticipation is going to shoot through our proverbial roof.

I’ll admit to being a lot more interested in the future of this franchise after watching this trailer. As one of my co-workers said after watching it, “This film will make or break the franchise.” As my wife has told me, this film is the bloodiest and has the most action (which is a good thing to hear as both Twilight and New Moon were full of mopey, love struck teens) scenes, so that should peak a lot more interest from the male fans who, like me, are on the fence about Twilight.
