Movie News (9/7/2008): /Film is reporting from a source at DeadlineHollywood that Sony has wrapped up Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4. The execs’ would like both Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 to be shot back-to-back, which fits nicely into the story that we broke back in May about James Vanderbilt’s script that he turned in.
Movie News (9/3/2008): Our friends at comingsoon report that Kevin Eastman, co-creator of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, has confirmed the rumors that Imagi and Warner Bros. are in talks to develop a new live-action movie based on the characters. The idea is to develop a darker, grittier, origin story of the Turtles, in lieu of the success of the darker Batman, that takes them all the way back to Shredder and how they came to be mutated.
Movie News (9/3/2008): Although I am a day late on this one, I wanted to make sure my ToC readers got in on the juicy Superman rumors that are going around. According to Slashfilm, Mark Millar, the writer of the Wanted comic book, says, in an interview with G4TV, that his idea for a new Superman would be a “Lord of the Rings” type epic trilogy that would totally start from scratch…and he wanted to start shooting next summer.
Movie News (9/2/2008): In some sad news that will surely affect the movie industry, long time movie-trailer voiceover artist Don LaFontaine has passed away from complications from pneumothorax at a hospital in Los Angeles, California. He has voiced thousands of movie trailers, from such films as “The Godfather,” “Fatal Attraction” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” just to name a few. His phrase, “…in a world” was so widely used and loved - and often parodied - that it actually became a cinematic cliche to use it in your movie trailer.
Movie News (8/25/2008): In some of the weirdest news that I’ve ever heard, The West Wing and Studio 60 writer-creator Aaron Sorkin revealed on his newly-created Facebook page that he’s writing a film about the founders of the popular social networking site. Scott Rudin will produce the film for Sony Pictures.
Movie News (8/19/2008): With The Dark Knight breaking every record known to man, and the fact that it’s a sequel of a franchise “reboot” (Batman Begins being the poster child), the executives at Warner Bros. are in turmoil of what to do with their other famous superhero, Superman. Superman Returns was highly regarded as a noble misfire with very mixed reactions and only moderate box-office numbers and the rush to put out a sequel has long since been delayed and while the studios are hard at work figuring out what the next move will be, one exec at Warner Bros. was quoted as saying, “…it might be better to start from scratch…”
Movie News (8/15/2008): Film School Rejects has brand new HIGH RES posters from Oliver Stone’s next picture entitled, “W” which stars Josh Brolin as President George W. Bush. Ironically, these posters are located in Denver which is where the Democratic National Convention will be held in late August.
Movie News (8/15/2008): In news that’s causing major uproar in the Harry Potter world, Warner Bros. has announced that they are going to delay the release of the 6th Harry Potter film until July 17th of 2009! Its originally scheduled air date was supposed to be November 21st of this year, but due to many reasons, it’s being pushed back to next summer. Warner Brothers’ COO Alan Horn has said, “…like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films, changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move Half-Blood Prince to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”
Movie News (8/14/2008): Anytime a movie makes a lot of money, the talk of sequels inevitably ALWAYS comes up. In this case, it’s talk of a Kung-Fu Panda sequel that, ironically, was rumored to be in development only a week after it debuted, that’s surfaced. In an interview done with Yahoo! Movies, Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, has stated that, “…we’ve started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we’ll be able to talk completely about that.”
Movie News (8/12/2008): Famed Alias and Cloverfield creator J.J. Abrams‘ next movie that he will produce and help write will be an earthquake disaster film with David Seltzer. It’s not going to be a remake or revamp of the 1974 Charles Heston classic Earthquake, but it will be a Cloverfield-esque disaster movie where “relationships will be at the core.”
