a-teamFor over a year now, a potential A-Team movie has been rumored to be in the makes, going as far as having Shaft director John Singleton attached, but it’s always been looked at as just a rumor. Something the fans of the 80′s TV show just hoped for desperately.

Well, it now looks to be a fully fledged movie that Fox is looking to release in the summer of 2010. They have canned Singleton and hired Smokin’ Aces helmer Joe Carnahan to direct and the Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony) to produce. Their production company Scott Free will handle the production side of things. The script they will be working from was written by Skip Woods, and so far, no one has been cast, but Michael Clarke Duncan has been rumored to have been offered the part of B.A Barracus.

I didn’t see Smokin’ Aces but heard from many people that it was a let down, so I don’t know how to judge whether or not Joe is going to be a good director. I cringe at the fact that they are trying to make this prized TV show into a movie in the first place, but I guess I’ve heard of worse things. (Ghost Rider 2 perhaps?)

As far as casting goes, Michael Clarke sounds like a good choice, though, there is no one who is going to be able to replace Mr. T.

I think a cast I would like to see would consist of:

Capt. Hannibal Smith – Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis
Templeton “Face” Peck - Brad Pitt or George Clooney
H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock – Jim Carrey or Steve Carell or Edward Norton
B.A. – Michael Clarke Duncan or Ving Rhames

What would be your best casting of this movie?

kung-fu-panda

Back in the summer of 2008 when I first previewed this movie, I had an idea that it was going to be great. The casting of Jack Black as a fat, lazy, but lovable panda who was chosen to be some more-than-animal warrior that he obviously wasn’t, was brilliant! I hadn’t even seen the film and I knew that the casting would make the movie great.

Now, I am not a huge Jack Black fan. Like Steve Carell, I think he’s a really funny actor, as long as he surrounded by other funny actors. I know that I am in the minority when it comes to this opinion, but I just don’t like Jack Black-led films. School of Rock was pretty good, probably my favorite of his leading roles, Nacho Libre was just ok to me, but I also loved him in High Fidelity, which was a movie he co-starred in with genius John Cusack.

I am also not a fan of animated movies that don’t come from Pixar. My stance on this has been firm throughout the history of Truth On Cinema, and there are countless posts where I have shared about it. Sony, Dreamworks, Insert Studio Name Here, have all tried to match the success of Pixar’s movies, and all have fallen short. Madagascar, Antz, Bolt, Ice Age, all movies that I’m sure kids and parents alike enjoyed, but to me they are mediocre “plan B” movies that you watch because Pixar hasn’t released their newest one yet.

So, armed with my underwhelming view of Jack Black leading a film coupled with my angst against any animated film that doesn’t come from Pixar, my wife and I sat down on an icy day to watch Kung Fu Panda. The result: IT WAS GREAT!

I thoroughly loved this movie! It had everything, humor, drama, big named stars that didn’t try too hard to shove their diva persona’s in your face, and some of the most amazing graphics I have ever seen. There was detail in that movie that I don’t think I have seen in other 3D animated films. I loved the colors of the film, the bright hues, the brilliant tones, it was just a picture perfect pallet. Throughout the film, I was amazed at the finest detail of the hairs on the ducks, or the texture of Panda’s fur, and even the little things that weren’t in focus that were happening in the background, their detail was clear as day. Technically, I think this film is a marvel. I don’t know what happened to Dreamworks Animation Studio, did they all take some new classes, get some new software, or finally fire the guy that wants to load the movie down with stupid big name actors and replace him with 3 or 4 new animators and modelers. Whatever they did, it worked.

Jack Black as Po the panda was pure genius. It literally was Jack Black. He didn’t become some new character who was a panda who wanted to learn kung fu, it was Jack Black wanting to learn kung fu. Every movement, either in the face or his body, totally captured Black’s essence. I felt like I was watching Black who happened to be in a panda suit, not a panda who happened to be voiced by Black. His humor was spot on, nothing surprising, typical Black self-deprecation mixed with the overuse of “awesome.” But, and here’s the surprising part for me, he was able to pull off sincerity and show me a heartfelt panda. I cared about Po, I wanted him to succeed, I anxiously waited for his chance to shine…AND THIS WAS A CARTOON!

Another one of the coolest elements of the film was the villain Tai Lung, voiced masterfully by consummate bad guy Ian McShane. He was frightening. No, I am not kidding, he was scary. I am not sure how little kids survived in the theaters when he showed up. His ferociousness was felt through the animation. His roar, his growl, the way he moved, his movements really evoked fear. That brings me to another great point about the film, the action sequences. The kung fu fighting in this film was awesome. (that was for you Jack) I know what you’re thinking, “Dan, it was animated animals doing kung fu. Don’t you think you’re taking this a little too far?” You may be right, but I don’t care, I loved the fighting sequences. They were fast, intricate, and easy to follow. I really enjoyed the slow-motion-bullet-time effect they would sporadically use to emphasize a great hit. Again, more detail that was paid attention to by the filmmakers that most animated filmmakers skip over.

If you haven’t seen Kung Fu Panda yet, go to Netflix, Blockbuster, or the Red Box at your local grocery store, and pick it up. This movie did so well when it opened, that a sequel is already, and was already in talks before it ever opened, in the works with all of the cast returning.

Content Warning: Rated PG for sequences of martial arts action. It’s a good film for the family. Just teach your kids not to hit other kids over the head with sticks or spiked clubs.

dark-knight-posterThere has been so much talk out in the Movie Blogosphere about The Dark Knight not being nominated for the Best Picture or Best Director award at this year’s Oscars, that this news may not even excite people.

According to Movieweb, Michael Uslan, executive producer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight told New Jersey’s Courier-Post that The Dark Knight sequel is expected to hit theaters in 2011:

Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the “Dark Knight” sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman’s supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. “It’s one of those deals where if I told you, I’d have to kill you,” he says with a chuckle.

It’s nice to hear some news coming out from an official source, someone who is ACTUALLY attached to the franchise, but Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, nor even Gary Oldman has been confirmed to return…but rest assured, they will be back.

dakota-fanningThe history of the Twilight saga on film isn’t shaping up to be a smooth road, with the underwhelming success of the first film, the loss of a director and subsequent hire of a new one within a few weeks, the constant casting rumors of concrete and important characters being let go, but this latest news might actually work out in its favor.

Slashfilm is reporting that they heard from E! Online that 14-year old actress Dakota Fanning has been straight up offered the role of Jane in the upcoming and very rushed sequel New Moon. A close source to the story explains that Fanning didn’t audition for the role, they just offered her the part and now they are negotiating back and forth.

In case you are not familiar with the Twilight world (as I am not and had to ask my wife about her) and the character of Jane in the next film, she is a member of the Volturi, an Italian group of vampires who maintain vampire order and ensure that humans don’t find out about vampires’ existence. In New Moon, Edward flees to see the Volturi following a grave misunderstanding about the state of Bella’s well-being, and asks them to end his life…

According to E! Online:

“In the casting notice we got our hands on earlier this month, Jane is described as a petite blonde with a ‘Botticelli angel-like face…[and] crimson irises.’ While fellow Volturi guards Demetri & Felix ‘are three times the size of her, they are terrified of her,’ the casting notice reads.”

I know not all of you are into the world nor know enough or care enough about it to chime in, but from a movie standpoint, I see the constant casting changes and director changes as a possibly negative. There’s something to be said for continuity and consistency throughout a series, especially one as famed as the Twilight series. The Harry Potter films have sort of proven that keeping consistent directors/writers links to immediate and assured success, but one could make the case of the quality of the Potter films declining after the first 2. (well, I know I would and could since I do feel that way) But, putting aside the generic movie standpoint and after reading that description of Jane, do you think Dakota can do it?

What are your opinions on the list? Notice any snubs? Are there movies that didn’t make it that you thought should be there? No Dark Knight, No Wall-E for Best Picture. I think the Academy is going to be hearing it from the fans in TV ratings for snubbing both of those fan favorites.

inside_man_ver3I don’t know if you ever saw Inside Man, but it came out in 2006, and it was one of the better bank heist movies I had seen in a long time. I just love heist movies that are smart and that are well planned out. There’s just something intriguing about those movies to me.

It was directed by Spike Lee and it starred Clive Owen as the criminal mastermind, Denzel Washington as the fatigued and weary NYPD cop (which is a character he plays in every one of his films), and Jodie Foster as a “ballsy” and unscrupulous businesswoman.

For over a year now a sequel has been rumored with original screenwriter Russell Gerwitz’s script, that involved Owen in a New York diamond district heist, but we now learn from an interview Spike Lee did with MTV that Gerwitz’s script has been ditched and Hotel Rawanda writer Terry George has taken over scripting duties.

The good news is that all of the original cast will be coming back and that we should see a movie around fall of next year.

From the interview with MTV Lee says:

“If the script is up to snuff, we’ll be shooting it. Here’s the thing: if everything lines up—people’s schedules are open, [we’ll begin in] late summer, early Fall.”

Did you ever see Inside Man? Did you like it? If you haven’t I highly recommend you go see it. If you’ve seen it, are you excited about a sequel?

It was reported last week that Gavin Hood, the director of X-Men Origins:Wolverine, and the rest of the crew were going back to do some extensive reshoots of the film. This typically isn’t the greatest news as it usually means something didn’t look right when they were editing, the story didn’t flow together well, there might have been some creative differences between the cast and the director that needed to be corrected, or a number of other things.

Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, through an email to AICN, explained why they went back for reshoots and to assuage the fans, he also sent along a new photo of some of the superheros that we may recognize.

About the reshoots…

Hey everyone! It’s Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie – I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we’ve got much more in store!

In the meantime, here’s an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize…

Cheers, Hugh

crimson dynamoI am a little behind on this news, but I didn’t want the Truth On Cinema readers to be in the dark for too long. Over the last couple of weeks, significant casting news has come out of the Iron Man 2 camp regarding the films’ villains.

The first big news to come out was that the main villain would be Crimson Dynamo and in negotiations to star is none other than the Wrestler himself, Mickey Rourke. From the Variety news article, Crimson Dynamo is described as Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit. So, that could be really cool, and it’s not a bad idea for Rourke to team up with Downey, that could make for an excellent combination.

justin_hammerThe other news is that Sam Rockwell is slated to play Justin Hammer, corporate nemesis of Tony Stark. He will most likely by a secondary villain in the film as he is instrumental in the downfall of Tony in the comics, thus leading him into deep alcoholism and losing everything he has. I don’t know who Justin Hammer is, but I know Sam Rockwell, and I like the idea. I haven’t seen a lot of Sam’s movies, but from what I have seen, I’ve liked. I don’t know anything about the character of Hammer in the comics, so I’m going to need some of my comic junkies to sound off about him and if Rockwell would be a good cast.

Now, that would be news enough, that could make for an excellent news worthy day. That could also be the makings of a really great Iron Man sequel, with Rourke, who is on top of the world right now, and with Rockwell who adds a quirky greatness to most of the things he does, this could be good…BUT, there’s more.

blackwidowNews has just come out yesterday that Marvel Studios and director Jan Favreau are looking for the right actress to play the femme fatale Black Widow, another nemesis to Tony Stark. Emily Blunt, who you might know from The Devil Wears Prada, The Jane Austen Book Club, and Charlie Wilson’s War, is the front runner to star as Natasha Romanoff, the Soviet spy who doubles as the skin-tight-leather-bound Black Widow.

All of this villain news worries me a lot! All I can picture in my head is the train wreck that was Spiderman 3. I don’t want an Iron Man movie with 10 villains, as a matter of fact, I think 3 is too much at this point. What happened to Mandarin and his whole storyline? Where does the 10 Rings come into play? What are they doing?

screamWhether you like it or not, Scream 4 is happening. According to Bloody Disgusting, Dimension Films, the studio that put out all 3 of the previous films, have hired Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two films, to pen the first draft of this “restart” of the Scream horror franchise. The quality of the draft and time will tell if his script will ultimately be the shooting script. Wes Craven may return as the director, but if not, he will at least get a producing credit.

The current idea for the story is that they want to restart the Scream franchise with a younger cast. I’m talking a glossy Gossip Girl-esque teeny horror movie that we’ve all seen before. It makes sense in this current market to start it over, but that isn’t news that gets me at all excited about seeing this. To assuage the older fans, (if they still exist) the studio is in negotiations with original cast members, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette to return and make cameos in the film. I am not sure that will be enough to gain a new audience for Scream.

[Source: Bloody Disgusting]

The movie may also be fast tracked for Halloween 2009. Scary? Are you interested? Any of this sound enticing?
